Safe Weight Loss: Discover the Disadvantages of Crash Diets

June 8th, 2010, Posted in General, Todays Thought

More and more people want to lose weight quickly and this is the reason why most of them indulge into a crash diet regimen. The sad part about this however is that these crash diets pose very serious health risks. If you want to have safe weight loss, don’t consider crash diet an option.

Here is a run through about the disadvantage of crash diets:

A. Muscle Loss

Going into a very fast weight loss is dangerous because your body might be burning your muscles instead of fats. Muscle loss can result to difficulties in losing fat and your body would end up working against your weight loss.

B. Slows Your Metabolism

Losing weight fast will make your body slow down on metabolism since it has to limit the amount of calories that it will burn. Skipping meals will make your body focus on its fat deposits since it is not receiving the right amount of calories that it should have. This will then make your metabolic rate decrease which means your weight loss would also slow down.

C. It is does not provide a long term weight loss and keep the weight away

If you think that crash diets provide a quick solution to your weight problem because you were able to lose a considerable amount of weight during the first weeks, you might be misdirected. The amounts of weight that you’ve lost during the first few weeks did not come from your fats but rather from you water deposits. Crash diets restrict your food intake which means that you could be taking less sodium. Sodium absorbs water and this is the reason why there is much water loss during the initial phase of doing crash diets.

Most dieters that undergo crash diets would have a rebound weight gain after a month because their body would like to take back the amount of calories that it used to have. The weight gain is relative faster and you would end up failing in your weight loss journey instead.

Still, the best way to have a safe weight loss is by doing it gradually so you would be able to sustain it and keep the weight away.

Health Benefits of Celery and Carrot Juice Recipes

March 31st, 2010, Posted in General, Todays Thought

Carrots and celery are two staple vegetables that we can find all year round at the supermarket. They are also great vegetables for making juice recipes at home because they are cheap, nutritious and have some great health benefits. Even organic carrots and celery are fairly cheap these days and are more cost effective than many other kinds of organic vegetables.

Health Benefits of Carrots
The deep orange color of carrot tells us that this vegetable is loaded with a plant pigment  that puts the orange hue in plants – beta-carotene. Beta-carotene, also known as pro-vitamin A because it can be turned into vitamin A in the body, is a potent antioxidant that can protect our cells from oxidative damage cause by free radicals. This is of great benefit to us because such cell damage can lead to cancer, heart disease and premature aging.

Beta-carotene, in the form of vitamin A, has been shown to be very effective at protecting us from developing lung cancer because it protects lung cells from free radicals that we breathe in via polluted air. Smoking is probably the most extreme method of breathing in pollution and  studies found that smokers who consume the most vitamin A in their diets are less likely to develop lung cancer than smokers who consume the least vitamin A in their diet. So we can see just how effective carrot health benefits are!

Heart Health Benefit of Celery
Protecting us from heart disease is one of the most notable health benefits of celery nutrition. Celery contain powerful antioxidants called phthalides that research has shown to be very effective at lowering blood pressure and helping to maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Phthalides provide this blood pressure benefit in two distinct ways.

1) Phthalides help the muscles around the arteries to relax. This allows the arteries to dilate more which increases blood flow through the arteries.

2) Phthalides also reduce the amount of stress hormones released in the body. These hormones cause the arteries to constrict and therefore raise blood pressure levels.

In addition to this celery also contains three minerals that are associated with improved heart and artery functions – calcium, magnesium and potassium. These three mineral all help the heart muscle to beat properly and deliver signals to the arteries so they can work more effectively.

Carrot and Celery Juice Recipe
5 Carrots
4 stalks of celery
1/2 red pepper

Wash vegetables and top the carrots. The celery leaves can also be juiced along with the stalks. Try to use organic produce where you can in these juice recipes to cut down on the amount of pesticides in the juice.

Something to Think About

October 29th, 2009, Posted in Todays Thought

‘You are prosperous to the degree that you are experiencing peace, health and plenty in your world.’

Nice thought – nice thinking.

Missin’ Opportunity – Part 2

October 27th, 2009, Posted in Todays Thought

OK here’s my Part 2 and the second thing I was tryin to find online – Tanning Beds. Now that’s pretty easy but again the websites suck!

I was reading mercola.com and Dr. M was talking about how important vitamin D is and how he thinks the best way to get it is by spending 15 or 20 minutes out in the sun. Unfortunately people up north like him and me don’t get enough sunlight to give us enough vitamin D about 7 months out of the year. So, we gotta get it somewhere else. Now Dr M was taking pills but now he has a new way – Tanning Beds that are safe and actually good for you.

You would think every tanning salon would jump on this and get some good info on their web sites about the heal benefits of tanning. Again, nothin – nada. All they want to talk about is how you can pick up more guys or gals and how great you’re gonna look. Talk about dough heads – these guys spend all of their advertising trying to get 20 year old who want to get laid when there are millions of us baby boomers who would pay a lot more and keep comin in til we died if we knew it would make us live longer!

Drivin’ Me Crazy!

October 26th, 2009, Posted in Todays Thought

You know I love this Internet thing but what drives me crazy is how poor business people are at using it!

I was workin round the house this weekend and I needed tow things – 1. I wanted to plant some bulbs in my garden so they would come up in spring time. So, I jumped on-line to see who in town had them. Nothin – nada. All the garden shops and even Home depot had crap sites that told me nothin. So I had to get on the phone, wade through the horrible voice mail systems then hold for ever while someone had to run and ‘check that department’. In today’s Internet age you would think just one of these guys would get their act together and use the Internet for what it is perfectly designed for – communicating with their customers – or in this case potential customer.

You’ll have to wait til tomorrow or at keast later to find out about my number two Internet frustration. I gotta run.

H1N1 and entitled Banks

October 21st, 2009, Posted in Todays Thought

What’s a cowboy to do on a rainy day? How about a good rant?

I am sick and tired of this damn H1N1 being stuffed down my throat every time I turn on the radio or TV – as the book so aptly titled says,

“If you don’t like the war. Turn the damn thing off!”

So true but so many people aren’t turning it off. They’re buying in hook line and sinker and it means the fat cats are winning once again.

Speaking of Fat Cats I got a letter in the mail from my bank letting me know how much they appreciate my 20+ years of business. But times are tough so my line of credit interest rate is gong to be put up from prime plus 2 to prime plus 4.19. Gee thanks! I’ve used this infrequently over the years but during these tougher times have felt the need to use it more over the past year. So, I was inclined to call and ask why I deserved such tremendous customer service. The lovely lady on the other end of the Royal Bank service line was pleased to let me know it had nothing to do with me. In fact I had an excellent credit rating, and they really appreciated my long term business however, “the banks are entitled to their profits”. Really, that’s exactly what she said! It’s tough on them right now with interest rates so low. So, they just decided it was time to get more from their customers after all why should the bank suffer isn’t it enough that all of their customers have to suffer?

And the rain keeps fallin’

Vaccines are Good for Business

October 20th, 2009, Posted in Todays Thought

While Americans debate getting a swine flu shot the drug companies have got it all figured it out: vaccines are good for business!

U.S. Pharmaceutical companies have already sold $1.5 billion of swine-flu shots.  Plus they’ve banked $1 billion for seasonal flu that they already sold earlier in the year. These shots are part of a much bigger and quickly growing $20 billion world-wide vaccine market.

Bruce Carlson says,  “The vaccine market is booming!” Carlson is a spokesperson at Kalorama, a Mkt Research company that publishes the annual survey of the vaccine industry. “It’s an enormous growth area for pharmaceuticals at a time when other areas are not doing so well,” he says, adding that the pipeline for more traditional blockbuster money-makers like Lipitor and Nexium has diminished.

It’s a great business to be in as with any vaccine for big business concepts labeled ‘pandemics’, taxpayers are the ones who cut the $1.5 billion check while it’s the government who puts in the order for the 250 million swine-flu vaccines and that’s just what they’ve convinced them to order so far. Of course we’re sold the idea that these will be distributed FREE to doctors, pharmacies and schools. And Congress has also put a side over $10 billion for researching flu viruses, monitoring H1N1′s progress and “educating” the public about prevention – aka propoganda insure we all get the FREE shot which of course we already paid for in our taxes!

Who’s cashing in? Well the drug makers will pocket almost all of the revenues from the flu vaccine. Specifically, Sanofi-Pasteur, Glaxo Smith Kline and Novartis have the greaest share of the market.

Keep in mind it is not just drug-makers who profit. Doctors are collecting ‘co-payments’ for the ‘special office visit’ required to inject shots. Yes, your doctor actually profits nicely from these vaccinations.

I’m Frustrated!

October 19th, 2009, Posted in Todays Thought

This has become one crazy world and it’s got me stuck in one big rut!  Some people call it ‘Information Overload’ others call it ‘paralysis by analysis’. Whatever, I just find I’ve got so much going on in my brain right now – so many ideas – so many ‘To Do’s’ that I don’t even know where to start! Anyhow, not a great way to start the week but hey thought I would share anyways. Add a comment if you are feeling or have felt the same way in the past. Maybe leave a suggestion to two. Thanks for listenng to my rant today!
