I’ve bough a bocote handle Bravo-1 with a black leather sheath about 1 year ago and I used it for batoning and choping and every hardcore task I could think of. Except using it as a shovel I guess, I would never do that to one of my knives. I am used to using pocket knives in the woods and to be able to use a full-tang fixed knife was a new experience for me. I am a convert now.

The handle

I love this about Bark River, so many different materials to chose from. It’s one of those companies who have really devout fans who will buy the same knife in a dozen different material type. I really liked the Bocote Wood looks so I bought that one and I got to say that it looks even better when holding it in hand.

The Micarta handles could be better suited for camping though. I can’t really say for sure as I haven’t used their Micarta, but the one I did use was more rough and provided a better grip than regular wood does.

The Blade

The blade is A2 in a convex grind. For a blade so thick, 4 mm spine, there is no better option than convex. And the best thing about a convex blade is the fact that it’s so easy to sharpen. Much easier than a V-grind. However some could argue that a V-grind would be a better choice for a survival camping knife, as the Bravo-1 is advertised. A V-grind, they say, is possible to sharpen in the field with stones you can find laying around. With a convex grind that would be impossible. Well I can’t really provide an answer to that problem, I never sharpened a knife in the field using a rock. At home though, the convex grind is much easier to sharpen.

The A2 rusts easily, and this is my only gripe with this knife. For a survival knife I would have preferred something a little more corrosion-resistant. I’ve used it with great care and I still have a few spots on my knife. If you were to forget it outside the tent one night, it could have disastrous results. Also this is not exactly the best tactical knife out there, but it’s true they never advertised it as such. You won’t be able to use it in a self-defense situation very effectively. It has a short reach, a way too thick spine.

The Sheath

It comes with a Kydex sheath or you can pay extra and have a leather sheath. I can’t comment on the Kydex sheath, altough I didn’t hear great things about it. The leather sheath though does its job, so I can’t complain there. I would advise you to get the leather sheath version if you have the extra cash laying around.
